November 2024 Newsletter

We had a great meeting last Monday night (November 4). The Fabulous Fearsome Foursome Finessed Finishing. Ron Zdroik began by talking about enhancements (carving and painting), Terry Alby gave a quick demonstration on dying, Steve Fostecz did an excellent remote demo on finishing and finally, Kevin Seigworth talked about products to use for various types of finishes. We had a big wood raffle to end the night.

I had a number of announcements to kick off the meeting. Here is a recap:

  • Dues – 2025 Dues are due. You can pay in person at our meeting, send a check to our treasurer or pay online. To send a check or pay online click here. Please pay your dues promptly!! If you do not plan to renew for 2025, please drop is a line and let us know.
  • We will have a demo of engraving equipment by SCM Systems for our Workshop Saturday on November 16. Stay tuned for an email announcing details.
  • Our annual Holiday Party is on December 2. The club provides the meat, bread and drinks. Bring a dish to pass. There will be a gift exchange (not mandatory). NOTE: There will not be a Zoom meeting or recording of this event, and there will not be a formal “Show and Tell” or a wood raffle.
  • For January, the meeting will be Zoom only. Our demonstrator will be Lyle Jamieson who will demonstrate hollowing. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 9:00 PM.

Odds and Ends:

  • We did not publish an October Newsletter. THANK YOU Mark Trenier for an informative and entertaining demonstration on turning ornaments at the postponed meeting on October 14.
  • Some of the wood on the Raffle Table was donated by The Urban Craftsman. Mary Schwaller tells me that they will now be stocking turning blanks. Please check out their web site, or stop in if convenient.
  • There was a large burl on the table donated by Barb Nelson from her late husband, Ron’s turning stock. Thank you, Barb.
  • We had a “full house” at the workshop day on October 19.
  • The 2025 AAW Symposium will be held in St. Paul, MN, June 12-15.

Board Business

  • The Milwaukee Area Woodturners will move forward with their own Zoom license which in the past we had shared with the WWG (Guild).
  • The board is considering the purchase of insurance that protects Officers and Directors from personal liability related to club business.
  • The board has approved paying approximately 1/3 of the cost of an industrial dehumidifier to be installed in basement at Woodcraft.
  • We have scheduled Sally Ault for a demonstration and workshop in July of 2025. More details to follow.
