Hi fellow MAWT members,
Although it might still be spring, summer has begun in earnest in Wisconsin. I hope everybody is enjoying the warm (actually HOT!) weather.
Our June demonstration by Dennis Belcher was filled with lots of information and creative ideas for dealing with cracks on your turned items. As Dennis said, “wood moves”, so cracks are inevitable with many woods. But by disguising them or purposely making them stand out, your turnings can take on a whole new look. So, instead of tossing that cracked bowl, you can try some of his tips.

I received a note from Ron Reuter, fellow member and also president of the Wisconsin Woodworkers Guild about a scam involving help for veterans. He wants to let everyone know that scam artists are taking advantage of club’s involvement with veteran organizations. Remember that MAWT never solicits monetary contributions for any charity and that everyone should be cautious of any organization asking for money or the purchase of gift cards. Please note however that MAWT and Woodcraft has worked with Turn for Troops for many years and has also helped with Wounded Warriors at the Milwaukee Woodworking show. These are legitimate organizations where we donate our time and turning skills and does not involve any money.
Finally, remember that MAWT will be having its first in-person meeting since last spring. The meeting will be held Monday, July 12th because of the Fourth of July weekend, starting at 6:30pm.
Summer may be the time for the great outdoors but the coolest spot in my home is the basement workshop, so I’ll be down in the shop occasionally doing some turning. Hope everyone has a chance to do the same.
Stay safe and keep turning,
Ron Zdroik
MAWT President
