December 2020 MAWT President’s letter
Hi fellow members,
As we reflect back and close out 2020, most of us are probably saying “good riddance!” Indeed, it has been a difficult and challenging year, not only for our own health and safety but also trying to keep the cohesion of a club like the Milwaukee Area Woodturners strong and active. Because we started our video capabilities early in the year, we were able to initiate Zoom meetings quickly. Between paid presenters and our members, we were able to have excellent demonstrations since May. Lacking was the camaraderie and hand shaking we take for granted when members meet at Woodcraft. Here’s hoping we are able to get together soon! However we meet in the future, we will continue with the Zoom broadcasts so all members can enjoy a meeting at whatever level they are comfortable with.
December meeting – our demonstrator for December was fellow member Steve Fosticz who did a couple of great demos on Christmas ornaments. Steve showed how easy it is to make decorative ornaments as a nice gift or for your own tree. Thanks, Steve! We also had several members show off their turned Christmas gifts in a virtual Holiday Show and Tell.
Survey – back in November, the Board sent out a survey and we had replies from 46 members. Overall, the Board and the club received a very favorable reviews on how we handled the club’s response to the Covid pandemic and the Zoom demonstrations:
There were many comments and suggestions along with a couple of criticisms which the Board will certainly take into consideration as MAWT marches into 2021. Thanks to everyone who responded.
New video and audio system – A quick shout out to the great efforts of Jerry Anson and the video team who put together our new video/audio system. It is a wonderful addition to the club’s effort to continually educate its members on becoming better turners and learning new techniques.
Dues – make sure you pay your 2021 dues so MAWT can continue providing you with demos, programs and information. You can pay by going either go the MAWT website at this link, or send a check for $35.00 (individual) or $50 (individual+spouse) to:
George Wawrzyniak

Closing Thoughts – this is my last President’s Letter as I end my term at the end of 2020. The club has grown and expanded with video broadcasts, new equipment, outreach events and community projects. The Milwaukee Area Woodturners is an excellent club with great members, whether they are novices or experts turners. Please continue to support the club by renewing your membership and volunteering for demonstrations, mentoring and the many social outreach programs we are involved in, such as Turn for Troops, Empty Bowls, and Beads of Courage. This club can only remain strong with your participation and membership!
I wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season and a healthy, prosperous New Year.
Safe turning,
Ron Zdroik
President
