Hi fellow MAWT members,
We started the club’s participation in the Empty Bowls project with a presentation by Colleen Vollard of Cream City Clay. Colleen has been involved with the Milwaukee Empty Bowls project for a long time and spoke about the October Soup Event and the various non-profits that benefit from the generosity of potters and turners who donate bowls…and also how much our wood bowls are coveted! Following Colleen was our very own Dueling Turners. In less than an hour, we had several bowls completed, some a bit rough yet and one or two that decided to fly off the lathe. Oh well – just another day for a woodturner!
The club is now set for remote demonstrations and we’ll start it with a demo by Mike Mahoney. Mike is known world-wide and specializes in bowls. The event will be Saturday, May 2 from 9AM to Noon. This will be in lieu of our regular Monday evening meeting. There is no cost to this event. More information on this inaugural remote demo coming soon.
MAWT is proud to be helping several charitable organizations:
As noted above, we just started the Empty Bowls program for the year. A special thanks to Rick Erdmann for his generous donation of 65 bowls. All of the bowl blanks were gone by the end of the evening, so we are hoping to have 65 Empty Bowls back! Another thanks to Barb Nelson for her donation of bowl blanks for Empty Bowls and also Beads of Courage.
The club welcomes Beads of Courage vessels throughout the year. I try to deliver them to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin on a regular basis so please keep making them for the kids and their bead collections.
Also, bring in pens for Turn for Troops. Last year we had over 1,000 pens!!! All of the kits and wood blanks are free, just ask at the meetings (available as kits of 20 pens). Turning a pen is incredibly simple and fast, so get a package, or two, or three.
The upcoming April meeting will focus on surface embellishment (patina, paint, etc.) and texturing. A turning can be good but sometimes the surface enhancements is what makes it GREAT! Be sure to attend on April 6th.
Safe turning,
Ron Zdroik
