May 2023 Newsletter

Can you believe it is May already? We are already over a third of the way through the year! This should have come out this morning (Sunday, 5/7/23) but I forgot to “publish” it so you will be seeing it Monday morning at the earliest.

If you weren’t able to join us for the May meeting, we had a fantastic turn out. There were about 60 persons in attendance at WoodCraft and we had another dozen or so on the Zoom meeting. We had a great wood raffle, a nice instant gallery and some good fellowship time. To top things off, Leigh White showed us how she makes an off-center bowl. Thanks Leigh! I have already had a try a making one and I hope to make another one or two just to get the techniques down pat. The video of Leigh’s demonstration is at the top of the Demo Videos Page.

Someone at the meeting asked me for help with the RPM read out on their Powermatic lathe – if you are that person please reply to the email that has the link to this article and let me know again who you are.

For June, we are looking forward to a demonstration/presentation by Dennis Clayton, on Photographing your Wood Art.

Volunteers – if you think you are a fit for one of the positions below, and are willing to help us out, please let me know:

  • Workshop Day Coordinator – this person would be responsible for setting up the meeting area with the club’s lathes and equipment, and making sure the meeting area is swept up and prepared for the next meeting at the end of the day. These duties will evolve as we become more accustomed to what these Workshop Days look like.
  • Audio/Visual (AV) team – this person would be a back up person for running the Zoom meeting, making and downloading the recording of the Zoom session

In conclusion, it is really heartening to see the growth in the club and the mix of new and longer term members. We hope that the things we do and the demonstrators that we have meet the needs and desires of our members. Please feel free to contact myself or any board member with any suggestions or requests.

We are considering sending out a questionnaire to get a sense of our members desires and opinions about certain things. Please don’t read too much or make any assumptions based on the questions. When that comes, please take a few minutes and answer those questions. It is very valuable information for the board.
