March 2025 Newsletter

Jay Guiliani and Mark Trenier presented this month on the topic of organizing your shop. Jay spoke to electrical considerations and offered to help advise anyone looking for solutions to electrical questions. Mark shared a presentation on the many ways and devices he uses to organize his shop to get the most efficient use of his space for turning. Thanks to both for sharing their experience and ideas.

Harold Solberg spoke to the group about former member Hank Bardenhagen. His family is willing to donate a large collection of premium turning stock in the hopes that it will be used to benefit MAWT, children, and youth turning. The board will consider how to best accomplish that. Let us know if you have ideas.

Ron Zroik spoke about cleaning up and organizing our space and equipment at Woodcraft. He is organizing a cleanup day so contact him to volunteer for that team. We need to make space and prepare to store the Bardenhagen wood collection until we finalize what to do with it.

Board News

MAWT is in need of someone to volunteer to be the program director. This position entails recruiting and organizing monthly demonstrators for our meetings. The programs for 2025 are mostly set so work would be for 2026 programs. Contact Kevin if you have questions or are interested.

Starting in 2025 MAWT will provide a $25 Woodcraft gift card for member demos. We will issue one card for one person demonstrating and two $25 gift cards if there are two people demonstrating. If there are more than two people participating in a demonstration each will receive a raffle ticket.

Meetings

There will be a Saturday field trip on March 29 with Mike Wendt demonstrating proper tree felling. MAWT members will have the option to take some of the felled Walnut tree home to turn. More detail will be provided closer to the event.

In April, we have Stuart Batty lined up to do an IRD (Interactive Remote Demo). The topic is cutting without torn grain on bowls and spindles. He will also demonstrate freehand platform grinding of his 40/40 grind. This meeting will be available both via Zoom and in our meeting room at Woodcraft.

The May meeting will be our Extended Show and Tell. The longer time gives members an opportunity to get into a little more detail and or show more than one or two items. Start thinking about what you plan to bring in to share with the club.

AAW Symposium

AAW offers a $40 discount to each member of our chapter to attend the symposium with a full registration. A separate email with the code will go out to members only.

Pen Turners

Anyone who would like to be on the email list for the Pen Makers Club can email Greg Richter their name and email address and he will add them to his communications list.

He averages about 1 email a month and does not disclose others’ email addresses. His email address is: greg.richter59@gmail.com

Carving

The Wisconsin River Woodcarving club has changed its rules slightly for the September 2025 show in Stevens Point Wisconsin. We decided to include wood turners and their turnings. Our rules state that at a table only the artist’s work is to be displayed. We don’t want this to become a craft show where products purchased elsewhere are shown for sale. Registration and show information is available on our website, wisconsinriverwoodcarvers.org
