Bob Leonard presented his staved lidded bowl for the Beads of Courage program. Bob came very well prepared with several examples in various stages of completion. Megan Hughes from Children’s Hospital, also spoke to the group. She had a short presentation for us on the Beads of Courage program for children going through cancer treatment.
Honorary Lifetime Members
The board approved our first honorary lifetime members. Honorary memberships are free memberships, with all rights and benefits thereof, intended to recognize those who have been long term members and made significant contributions to the club over an extended period of years.
Barb Nelson was instrumental in helping to set up MAWT as a 501 C (3) non-profit corporation. She creates hand made cards of condolence for the families of deceased members. Barb also initiated the annual Christmas party.
Jerry Anson was active in doing club demonstrations, especially his artistic segmented work. Jerry was our lead AV person for many years and was always willing to lend a hand when something needed done.
Jerry Tackes conducted many club demonstrations and provided one on one mentoring. Jerry was always willing to teach someone a new skill or help them solve a woodturning problem. Everyone who knows Jerry has likely been helped by him sharing his immense woodturning knowledge and skill.
German Fest – This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate and sell your work. It runs Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26 at the Summerfest grounds. German Fest provides free parking, meal tickets, and entrance in exchange for your demos. They get a fee of 15 percent of your sales. If you are interested in participating your contact information is needed by June 15. Randy Shilling is our leader for this event.
Next meetings – In July, we will not have the regularly scheduled Monday evening meeting and instead will have a special demonstration on Saturday, July 25th. Rob Nelson will demonstrate hollowing and will turn an enclosed form. There will be no charge for members for this special event, but you will have to bring your own lunch. Please register on our website so we know how many to expect.
August will be a typical Monday evening meeting with Mark Dryer presenting Easywood carbide tools.
In September, Matt Monaco will be visiting from his studio in Missouri. https://www.monacobowls.com/ He will be doing a demo on Saturday, September 26 on advanced bowl turning with a bonus segment on the skew. The charge for this special event is $45 for the day long demo which includes lunch.
We are offering hands-on classes with Matt on the following Sunday and Monday. See our website, www.mawturners.com for details and to register for the demo and the classes. The classes are limited to ten participants each. We will open the registration up to non-members on June 15. (NOTE: as of this morning, we have 6 signed up for Sunday and 8 signed up for Monday).
EMPTY BOWLS
The bowls should be about 4″-7″ in diameter and 2″-3″ deep.
They do not need to be Food-Safe – the majority are for decorative use and not for food.
Turn a couple or turn a lot (some members have turned dozens and even over a hundred!!!)
Drop them off at club meetings. The last drop-off is the September meeting.
