Board News
The board approved a request from the Empty Bowls event organizers, Nourish Milwaukee, to demonstrate bowl tuning during their event in October.
Next Meeting – No Monday evening meeting on July 7
On July 19 and 20, Sally Ault will be here in person from California to do a Saturday demo on dirty pour lids, then a Sunday hands on class on lidded bowls. See our website for details on registration and the events. Please register ahead of time so we can get an accurate count for food and beverages.
Sally has been a demonstrator at the Utah, Honolulu , North Dakota and Wisconsin Symposia, at a number of woodturning clubs and at John C. Campbell Folk School, Arrowmont School of Art and Craft and Marc Adams School. She was a featured demonstrator at the American Association of Woodturners symposium in 2016 , on 2 panels at the 2017 AAW symposium and demonstrated at SWAT in Waco, TX in August of 2017, 2019 and 2022.
Dirty Pour Lids
===============
This is a fun and slightly messy demo. Sally shows how to prep the lid for the paint and shows the process for doing the dirty pour. The audience gets to participate by picking the colors. The result is a lid that looks somewhat marbleized or tie-dyed or even psychedelic, depending on the approach. This process is a creative way to make interesting lids as well as a good way to “dress up” an otherwise uninteresting piece of wood. If time permits, interested attendees can try their own dirty pours after the demo. Sally will bring a few extra pieces of wood for that. She will leave the pieces that she does with us to raffle off or whatever we choose to do.
Lidded Bowls
============
This hands-on class shows the process of making a side grain bowl with a lid. First, Sally covers the turning techniques for the bowl. Next, she shows how to make a shallow lid along with tricks to mounting both sides of the lid for finishing. Sally also discusses design considerations, wood choice, and choosing finial or knob materials (especially using interesting “found” objects).
German Fest
MAWT has an opportunity to promote our club by demonstrating and selling turnings at German Fest this year. This event draws 65,000 to 70,000 people and will be held this year on July 25, 26 and 27. Hours are Friday 3 to 9, Saturday noon to 9, Sunday 11:30 to 7.
MAWT members will be in a space inside the Culture Tent, 60 by 120 feet enclosed, along with member Randy Shilling, and two other carver/turners that have participated in this event for many years. German Fest is looking for handmade item demonstrations for attendees. You would be encouraged to sell your work. The cost to participate is 15 % of sales paid to German Fest. They provide free entrance, parking and a meal voucher to participants.
Randy and the other participants have sold $1,000 or more of their items each over the three day event. Setup would involve one of our MIDI lathes, the plexiglass safety shield, and our new club banner. Setup is done Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Tear down is done Sunday evening at about 7.
Randy has participated for years and will be there full time for the event. We are looking for members to join him in the tent to demo, promote MAWT, and sell your work if you choose to. We are asking for at least 3 hour shifts if you participate. Moving and setting up the lathe will require two people. Contact Kevin Seigworth, president@MAWturners.com , with questions or to sign up.
Wood auction and shop day
The wood auction is live on our website. We are planning to make the items available to view in person at our next open shop day on Saturday, June 21 from 9 to noon.
Beads of Courage vessels
Hi to all members,
The Milwaukee Area Woodturners has been donating Beads of Courage vessels for many years. I am planning to donate the club’s contributions to Children’s Wisconsin Hospital in August. Please drop off your turned item at the August meeting (August 4th).
For information, you can click on the Beads of Courage link below. The Donation Guidelines button will provide suggestions about size and finishes. Please remember that the vessels should have a Beads of Courage ceramic button. You can sign your turning if you wish.
Basic information – suggested interior size: 5″-6″ diameter x 4″-5″ height. I use Minwax water-based varnishes that air dry for several days. You can make a nice lidded vessel or be as artistic as you wish.
Thanks,
Ron Zdroik
