(Click the triangles at the left of the lines below for more information on each day)

Saturday, April 20 – Demonstration

Alan will be covering thoughts on sharpening, working with the skew, hollowing end-grain cleanly and efficiently and making a turned lidded box.  As time allows, he will make a basic hook tool as used for end-grain hollowing.

Sunday, April 21 – A DAY WITH SKEW

A skew fundamentals hands-on class especially for those who have never used the skew or who are apprehensive about it. Class will cover tuning up the skew by refining the long corners, creating a functional edge shape and putting a nasty sharp edge on the tool. From there we’ll look at making the lathe “skew friendly” by tuning up the tool rest and driving with a ring drive (some call it a “safe driver”). Next, we’ll begin with some fundamental cuts (at least five). Alan will leave you with ways to practice and projects to make using only a skew.

What to bring: any and all skews you already possess. Alan prefers the non-oval skews and will have skews to sell (before, during or after the class) AND skews to loan for the class. Also, bring any diamond hones you may already possess. If purchasing skews or hones before the class please contact Alan for his suggestions: alan@alanlacer.com or 651 307 9059

Monday, April 22 – THE TURNED LIDDED BOX

If you like a challenge take a turn at making the end-grain lidded box. Alan will cover wood selection, suggested dimensions, mounting techniques, methods for efficiently and cleanly hollowing end-grain. He will also discuss and show example of joint treatments—decoration at joint as well as different types of fits (loose, suction, snap and threaded).

Goal is to complete at least one end-grain lidded box. He will also give suggestions for finishes. Alan will also have a wide variety of examples to stimulate a passion for lidded boxes.

What to bring: basic between center tools such as a spindle roughing gouge, detail/spindle gouge, parting tool (standard and/or thin-kerf style) and a skew chisel. For hollowing techniques bring a ½ or ¾” wide scraper (5/16 or 3/8” thick is desirable) and any end-grain hollowing tools such as a hook or ring tool (such as the Oneway Termite).
