Matt Monaco operates full-time woodturning studios within the Ozark region of the USA and offers his works to select local & worldwide clientele of both custom retail & wholesale craft industry and collectors as a full-time professional maker of traditionally turned craft.

At the center of Matt’s work is his understanding in the importance of pursuing fine form, finesse, advanced tool control, sharpening, and cutting execution as a reflection of traditionally crafted design; in producing works made to be as tactile as they are sublime and created with intent & purpose.

Location:

Club room (basement) of Woodcraft of Milwaukee, 14115 W Greenfield Ave, New Berlin, WI 53151

Demo: Saturday September 26, 9:30 to 4

Advanced bowl turning: Fine design, form and function is the Saturday demo topic. Plus skew work for spindle turners. Admission is $45 (catered lunch included). Non-members admission is $55.

Classes: Sunday September 27 and Monday September 28

Classes are $130 per person per day. Turners may attend one or more days (lunch included). Daily class size is limited to 10 turners and must be prepaid to hold your spot in the class. Non-members will be $140.

Fine Detail Platters: Sunday

Learn to create, shape, and finish beautifully elegant plates and platters on the lathe. Explore how to add fine detail to accentuate and reinforce balance within the overall form. Emphasis will be placed on developing fine tool control, design & form aesthetic, finesse, the nuances of sharpening, and creating fine utility finishes.

Fine Detail Platters (materials needed):

Bowl/Platter Blanks (Dry Stock — most readily available hardwood)
Preference for student wood selection should lean towards using domestics that are generally known for being non-toxic. Maple, cherry, ash, beech, poplar
2×10×10 or close is acceptable.
1-2 per student should be acceptable.

Turned Wood Pottery Vessels: Monday

Explore the finer points of designing, shaping, and finishing beautifully elegant, semi-enclosed vessels that emulate the detail & traditions found in various pottery, and ceramic styles. Explore a fine-tuned, and advanced usage of bowl and spindle gouges, alongside their most beneficial grinds and cutting applications to develop a natural eye for form while developing skill, and learning to create, or improve quality of one’s work at the lathe.

Turned Wood Pottery Vessels (Materials Needed):

Bowl/Platter Blanks (Green or Dry Stock — most readily available hardwood)
Preference for student wood selection should lean towards using domestics that are generally known for being non-toxic. Maple, cherry, ash, beech, poplar
3×8×8 or close is acceptable.
1-2 per student should be acceptable.

What Students Can Bring to Class:

Typically, my students will bring their own traditional woodturning tools. I imagine that they will bring a tool roll full of at least their main favorite tools such as skews, scrapers, bowl & spindle gouges —all are acceptable for both classes, as we’ll be modifying tools as is necessary.
