April 2026 Newsletter

At our April meeting, Chris Kelliher presented his approach to turning offset mushrooms.  It was a fun and informative demo.  It was pretty exciting to see that mushroom spin in an eccentric circle while Chris was turning the offset stem.  Several people were holding their breath but the chuck held on and nothing went flying.

The May meeting is an extended show and tell.  This is your opportunity to go into more detail or show more pieces than our normal show and tell time allows.  You can bring in a tool or jig or anything that helps you turn, as well as finished pieces.

In September, Matt Monaco will be visiting from his studio in Missouri.  https://www.monacobowls.com/ Matt is one of the featured demonstrators at the AAW Symposium in June. He will be doing a demo on Saturday, September 26 on advanced bowl turning. Topics include fine design, form and function, effective cutting and how to shape and sharpen tools.  In past years we charged $40 for the day long demo which includes lunch.  The MAWT board has not finalized prices yet for these events.

We will offer hands-on classes with Matt on Sunday and Monday.  In past years we were able to source lathes for up to 10 students.  The charge was $120 and included lunch.  We need to select two classes from the following list.  I did get feedback at the April meeting, but here is another opportunity to help select the classes.  If you would plan to sign up and pay for one or two of these topics, send me an email at president@mawturners.com and let me know which one(s).

  1. Turn wood pottery vessels- semi enclosed vessel form found in classic pottery and ceramics
  2. Foundations in Woodturning- tool control, finesse, skill and confidence at the lathe on end and side grain projects
  3. Fine detail platters
  4. Fine ogee vessel
  5. Skew chisel – learn, understand and master the skew

Youth Turning Program – MAWT is in need of a volunteer to step forward to lead our effort to develop a youth turning program.  Darrell Kohlmann is not able to continue in this role.  If helping young people learn to turn appeals to you, contact me to discuss further.
